How to Choose the Gender of Baby– Different Myths that Surrounds Conceiving a Baby Boy or Girl.

How to choose the gender of baby has been as legendary as life itself. Women desirous of having the baby gender of their choice have always tried their hands on several techniques which they believe could ensure conception of the baby gender which they love or want, including myths. Most of these myths have been in existence for ages particularly amongst the Chinese. The fact remains that these myths are not guaranteed ways of conceiving the baby gender of choice since they are not supported by scientific facts. However, the fact that they have remained and are still believed up till today is an indication that they sometimes work. This write up is therefore designed to look at some common myths surrounding the picking of the sex of a baby.

The breast size and resting side: This myth goes that if the female left breast is larger than the right, the odds are better that she will have a baby girl. If however the right breast is larger, then she should expect a boy. Applying the same kind of "logic", if a pregnant woman is more comfortable lying on her left side, odds are that she will give birth to a boy. With right-side resting preference, she can expect a girl. However, whether the relative breast size or the resting side can determine how to choose the gender of a baby (girl or boy) has not really been verified by medical research.
The person that initiated sex: According to this myth, if it is the woman that initiated sex at the time of conception (the aggressive partner), chances are that a boy will be conceived. If however it is the male that initiated sex at conception, a female baby gender will be conceived. This has not been supported by any medical proof.
Mother’s age at conception: This myth suggests that age may be a variable in how to choose the gender of baby. In principle, increase in the female age result in changes in hormonal balance which could alter the pH level of the vagina environment. One could also suggest that the age of the male could also result in a differential amount of girl or boy sperm being produced. There is however no medical proof supporting these.
Gender and Diet: According to this myth, salty foods taken before conception are said to favor the choice of baby boy gender while sweet foods favor the baby girl gender. This is however not supported scientifically. In point of fact, too much salty or too much sweet foods could endanger one’s health. Therefore caution is recommended.
Where the baby sits and Heart rate: According to this myth, if you are pregnant and you carry your baby out front, rumor has it that you will have a boy. If it can be determined that you are pregnant by observing the mother from the back, the myth says that you will have a girl. There is however no scientific proof supporting this. Similarly, the heart rate of the baby is also said to offer clues about how to choose the gender of baby. 140 beats or more per minute is said to favor a girl. However, less than 140 beats per minute is said to favor a boy.

It is instructive to note that the choice of baby gender is determined during conception and not during the period of pregnancy. These myths are conjectures and nothing more. There are really no scientific or medical proofs supporting them. The mechanism that determines the gender of your baby is not random chance. Rather, baby gender is determined by a single sperm cell and the specific gender chromosome that an individual sperm cell carries with it. In this sense, the sperm cell is the gamete responsible for the determination of gender - and of all the sperm produced by the man, about 50% will carry the "girl" gene (X-chromosome) and about 50% will carry the "boy" gene (Y-chromosome). What decides baby gender comes down simply to which of these sperm fertilizes the egg first.
